Attacking public safety and local first responders

At a time when crime is on the rise and emergency response is more important than ever, Kollin Kosmicki choose to attack first responders and public safety instead of making the hard decisions needed to keep San Benito County safe.

Kollin Kosmicki supported significant budget cuts to the Sheriff’s Office, the Probation Department, the District Attorney's Office, and other county services during a fiscal shortfall. These cuts included reductions to law enforcement staffing, a hiring and salary freeze, and the elimination of the County’s Public Information Officer.[1] Public safety groups publicly criticized the Board for cutting frontline services while maintaining comparatively smaller reductions to the Board’s own budget.[2]

Kosmicki even negotiated a “backroom deal” new fire services agreement that reduced minimum staffing levels on local fire engines and complained about paying firefighters for overtime, saying the cost was “far too high.” [3]

Betraying his promises and serving special interests

Kollin Kosmicki has a long record of broken promises, ethical lapses, and problematic relationships with special interests.

During his campaigns, Kosmicki pledged to limit donations and reject contributions from “special interests,” particularly developers and real estate interests.

In spite of this promise, Kosmicki accepted seven contributions exceeding his self-imposed limit and even took money from powerful local real estate interests.[5] Even worse, Kosmicki ended up appointing his donors to key local commissions—stripping our community of their voice in local decision making in favor of elevating wealthy donors.[6]

It’s no wonder that Kosmicki has been investigated multiple times for ethical lapses. He was required by the State’s Ethics Watchdog to take an education course after breaking the law and failing to publicly disclose income on his mandatory disclosure reports.[7] He even continued the operation of a company after it was suspended by the Franchise Tax Board, in violation of state law. As a result of these illicit operations the state issued Kosmicki a “Statement of Information delinquency” and “penalty certification” and eventually suspended his company.[8]

San Benito deserves public officials who stand up for public safety and integrity. Kollin Kosmicki isn’t it.
